I can’t say we have tried enough approaches to figure out the best way yet.

However one way that seems to work very well is to ask a young engineer to read 10 – 15 pages every week.

Each Friday, the engineer writes 200 – 500 words reflecting on the work they have been doing during the week and where they have noticed something in their work that reflects material they have read recently in the book.

It’s surprising how much they write: often a lot more than 500 words, because they find so much in their work that directly relates to what they have read in the book.

Try this with your own engineers, or yourself, and let me know how you get on.
